Nicanor Moldovan's Biography

Nicanor Moldovan, Associate Research Professor, Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Ophthalmology, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

Dr. Nicanor I. Moldovan is an Associate Research Professor at IUPUI, and founding Director of the 3D Bioprinting Core at Indiana University School of Medicine. He received an MS in Biophysics at the University of Bucharest, Romania and his PhD in Cellular Biology from the ‘N. Simionescu” Institute of Cellular Biology and Pathology also in Bucharest, Romania. After a post-doctoral training in Cardiovascular Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, he performed bio-medical and bio-engineering research at the Oho State University in Columbus, OH. His current work at IUPUI is in scaffold-free biofabrication, bioprinting, implant bio-compatibility, and in computer modeling of cells and tissues. He is also an Associate Editor of Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine.

Bioprinting is one of the most advanced forms of biofabrication. ‘Scaffold-free’ bioprinting relies only on the cells’ ability to reconstitute complex bio-similar tissues, without the need of an artificial material as bioprinting support (or ‘scaffold’). I will illustrate this concept with the case of ‘Regenova Bio 3D Printer’, commercialized in Japan by Cyfuse Biomedical K.K., and in US by its subsidiary Amuza, Inc. This technology is now available in our recently-established 3D Bioprinting Core facility that serves the researchers at our University and in Midwest USA.
