Ethan Guillen's Biography



Ethan Guillen, Dx program manager, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

Ethan Guillén leads a program at Médecins Sans Frontières to improve diagnosis and management of patients with fever. He has worked for years to promote access to medicines and develop a more just biomedical R&D system that delivers affordable medical interventions driven by patient need. At the Medicines Patent Pool, Ethan worked on strategy and advocacy in order to realize the MPP's vision of increased generic production of life-saving HIV medicines in developing countries. As the first Executive Director of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, Ethan led and greatly expanded an international student advocacy effort that has put in place policies to improve access to medical interventions in resource-limited settings.

Many patients present to Médecins Sans Frontières with fevers that are difficult to diagnose. There is a need for affordable, robust, semi-open source multiplex diagnostic platforms at the referral level to identify the fever-causing pathogen, antibiotic susceptibility, and bacterial infections.
