Brenda Ogle's Biography



Brenda Ogle, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, University of Minnesota

Brenda Ogle is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Professor Ogle received her training at the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic and began her academic career as Assistant and later as Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The primary research interest of her laboratory is stem cell differentiation, especially in the context of the cardiovascular system. Toward this end, Professor Ogle also develops novel technologies to analyze stem cell behavior including multiphoton flow cytometry to analyze microtissues in high throughput and ECM-based hydrogels to augment 3D stem cell culture regimes and as a therapeutic strategy for cardiac tissue repair. Professor Ogle is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, Regenerative Medicine Minnesota and the American Heart Association.

The promise of cardiac tissue engineering is in the ability to design replacement muscle for clinical therapy.  Refined techniques for deriving cardiac muscle cells from stem cells coupled with advanced scaffolding techniques and 3D bioprinting are paving the way for a new generation of simulated cardiac tissues.  Recent success, ongoing challenges and the role for industrial innovation in this growing field will frame the content of this talk.
