Gururaj Guddappa Kulkarni, Senior Scientist, Research Infrastructure and Operations, IRRI

Dr GuruKulkarni is Senior Scientist and Overall in-charge of Research Infrastructure and Operations function at IRRI. He oversees Transgenic Stewardship, LT Evans Plant Growth Facility Center, Seed Health Unit, Operational efficiency, Research Infrastructures, Health & Safety and Special projects like Solar energy, Mechanization etc at IRRI. He has two decades of experience in Research & Product Development function by handling lead roles in Research Infrastructure, Operations, Research experimentation station management, Product Biology, PVP/IP, Regulatory and Biotech Affairs functions. Dr Kulkarni is currently heading territory team of infrastructure and Research experimentation station managers to ensure the operational efficiency of research activities of breeding, biological assessment functions, field trials across multi-location target environment locations. He developed robust process for Field & lab operations, quality trials, Infrastructure projects, HSES aspects, compliance of research function to deliver R&D strategies / products in timely manner and led the team managing the seed / gene bank, around seed import / export, storage, replenishment, quarantine trials etc. He developed expertise in other areas like subject expert in the areas of legal & R&D functions like Plant Variety Protection, IP aspects, Registration & Regulatory Affairs (agro-chemicals & Seeds) and Seeds Germplasm movement aspects. He also led agro chemical product registration data generation (in-house and institutional trials and registration trials) of new chemicals and label expansion activities and their registration under CIB &RC and is an expert in data generation package for regulatory & registration of new molecules and combinations. Over the last decade, he developed a lot of contacts with the key stake holders in different ministries at central & state level and with Policy makers, Regulators and Scientific community within and outside Asia and has good contacts with the Agri-industry associations in India (ABLE-AG, NSAI, State units), Crop Life (Region & Global), ASTA (Global).
Dr Kulkarni did his Bachelors in Agriculture & Masters In Agricultural Entomology from University of Agricultural Sciences Dharward in 1995 & 1997 respectively. Followed this, he prsued Doctor of Philosophy in Entomology from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, Haryana India (2001) & Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights (PGDIPR) from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi (2009).
He has published more than 30 Research Papers / Scientific papers ; more than 100 News paper / Magzine articles & Co-authored two books on “Plant Variety Protection” in 2007 & 2009, Authored “R&D Stations catalogue”, Coauthored “ GM Green House Manual, Authored “R& D Operation Manual”, Co-authored SOP manual on Health Safety Environment and Security (HSES) in 2015 for research farms and laboratories in Syngenta. He is the receipient of many awards and is a member of many professional societies.
