Neera Garg's Biography

Neera Garg, Professor, Panjab University

Dr Neera Garg is a Professor of Botany at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. Her research work focuses on impact of abiotic stresses such as salinity, heavy metals, etc on biological nitrogen fixation in legumes and alleviation of these stresses using soil-microbes like Rhizobium and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. She has extended her work on inter-relationships between rhizobial symbiosis, mycorrhization and exogenous alleviants such as Silicon, flavonoids, polyamines etc in imparting tolerance to abiotic stresses. She was awarded fellowship in 2007 by Indian Society for Plant Physiology, New Delhi, India. She also received Shiksha Rattan Puraskar from India International Friendship Society, New Delhi, India in 2007. She has headed major UGC and DBT projects investigating use of Rhizobium, AM fungal species and exogenous alleviants in imparting stress tolerance to legumes especially chickpea and pigeon pea. She has been a frequent participant in European/International Nitrogen Fixation and Plant Physiology Conferences and has delivered lectures at these events. Her work on legumes and their tolerance mechanisms has been published in reputed journals of high impact factors and is well cited. She has over 100 publications in international and national journals. She has conducted a number of workshops related to role of soil-microbes and their interactions with plants in various colleges and research institutions.
