Peter Ertl's Biography



Peter Ertl, Professor of Lab-on-a-Chip Systems, Vienna University of Technology

Prof. Ertl holds an engineering degree in Biotechnology (University of Life Sciences, Austria), a PhD in Chemistry (Universtiy of Waterloo, Canada) and received his postdoctoral training as a biophysicist at University of California at Berkeley (US). In 2003 Dr. Ertl co-founded a biotech start-up company, where he served a number of years as Director of Product Development in Kitchener (Canada) developing benchtop-sized microbial analyzers. In 2006 Dr. Ertl moved to Austria where he worked as Senior Scientist in the Biosensor Technology unit at the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT). During his tenure at AIT, Dr. Ertl was also granted a Fulbright Visiting Scholarship at UC Berkeley and conducted visiting scientist positions at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2013 and the Medical Center of the University of California at San Francisco in 2014. In 2016 he was appointed Professor of Lab-on-a-Chip Systems for Bioscience Technologies at the Vienna University of Technology, where his research focuses on the development of advanced in vivo and in vitro diagnostic microsystems.

Organ-on-a-chip technology offers the potential to recapitulate human physiology by keeping human cells in a precisely controlled and artificial tissue-like microenvironment. The current and potential advantages of organ-on-chips over conventional cell cultures systems and animal models have captured the attention of scientists, clinicians and policymakers as well as advocacy groups in the past few years. Recent advances in tissue engineering and stem cell research are also aiding the development of clinically relevant chip-based organ and diseases models with organ level physiology for drug screening, biomedical research and personalized medicine. Here, the latest advances in organ-on-a-chip technology are reviewed and future clinical applications.
