Andrei L. Gartel, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of more than 70 peer-review publications that include more than 15 reviews with more 3000 citations. His scientific interests include the regulation of cell cycle progression, cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors, oncogenic transcription factors FOXM1 and c-Myc, and mechanisms of action of anticancer drugs. Recently his lab identified proteasome inhibitors as first chemical inhibitors of oncogenic transcription factor FOXM1, which is overexpressed in a majority of human cancers. FOXM1 and NPM are over-expressed in human cancers. NPM interacts with FOXM1 and their interaction is required for sustaining the level and localization of FOXM1. Targeting the interaction between FOXM1 and NPM may represent a novel therapeutic strategy against cancer.
