Michael Spano's Biography

Michael Spano, PhD Candidate and Researcher, University of California-Irvine

Michael Spano is completing his doctoral work at the University of California Irvine in the Weiss Research Laboratory. He divides his time between Southern California and Northern New Mexico where he can access resources from Los Alamos National Laboratory. His peer-reviewed papers are mainly focused on increasing productivity in the modern synthetic chemistry and biochemical laboratories. Michael has found a unique way to bridge 3D-printing, microcontrollers, synthetic chemistry, and synthetic biology with his research. In the years to come he hopes to increase our understanding of biocatalytic systems and provide compelling examples to make the switch to enzymatic catalysis.

Rocket propulsion has largely relied on hydrazine as a hypergolic propellant. Safer and higher performing fuels are replacing hydrazine in the aerospace industry. We draw our attention to one such alternative and show how this target may be synthesized via chemo-enzymatic catalysis in continuous flow.
