Wolfgang Schulz's Biography



Wolfgang Schulz, Research Director, Heinrich-Heine-Universitat

Prof. Wolfgang A. Schulz, PhD, is research director at the Department of Urology at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. He was born and grew up near Frankfurt, studied biochemistry at Tübingen and spent important formative postdoctoral periods in the Dept. of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh, PA and the Dept. of Medical Genetics of the University of Ulm before starting his own group at Düsseldorf in 1989. Major research interests comprise DNA methylation and epigenetics of bladder and prostate cancer. Another major interest is teaching molecular oncology. Research in his group has been supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Deutsche Krebshilfe and several foundations.

Over the last decade, the simple concept of focal hypermethylation and global hypomethylation as the typical alterations of DNA methylation in human cancers has matured and interactions between changes in DNA methylation and chromatin states are better understood.
