Hansjoerg Lehmann's Biography

Hansjoerg Lehmann, Lab Head, Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK Limited

Hansjoerg LEHMANN studied chemistry at the University of Stuttgart and received in 1991 his PhD in organic chemistry. After a post-doctoral stay at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) in the group of Prof. Viehe, he started his industrial career in 1992 at the former Hoechst company (Frankfurt, Germany) as a Lab Head in agrochemical research. In 1997 he moved from chemical research to the chemical development of now Aventis Cropscience where he became a technical project leader in chemical process development. In 2003, he joined the Preparation Laboratories of the Novartis Pharma AG at Basel, Switzerland where, as a Lab Head, he is responsible for synthesis of intermediates, building blocks and APIs on a 20 - 500 g scale for medicinal chemists. In 2004 and 2005, an outsourcing process was installed and collaboration with various outsourcing companies was initiated. Since then, this group is working together with 5-7 CROs in order to ensure a reliable support of medicinal chemistry with intermediates and building blocks

Within Novartis Research, the GDC Preparation Laboratories support medicinal chemistry by providing intermediates, building blocks and other compounds on larger scale. Increased demand for fast scale-up and limited internal capacity have encouraged us to work together with external partners and to outsource some of our projects. The presentation will highlight how we developed a strategy for this outsourcing process and how we evaluated and selected a number of companies which fulfilled our requirements. Some key success determinants, which are used to monitor the outsourcing process, will be discussed. Finally, some case studies will be shown in order to illustrate what we consider a successful outsourcing project.
