Robert Esmond's Biography



Robert Esmond, Director, Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox P.L.L.C

Dr. Esmond is a graduate of the National Law Center at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. In addition, Dr. Esmond holds a doctorate degree in chemistry from Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA. Dr. Esmond is a director at the Washington, DC, USA law firm Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox P.L.L.C. His intellectual property law experience has principally been in the biotechnology and chemical areas. His legal experience includes counseling clients in various intellectual property matters such as patentability investigations, validity and infringement analyses, freedom to operate and FDA/ANDA practice. He has also prepared and prosecuted patent applications relating to bioprinting, pharmaceuticals, therapeutic methods, agricultural chemicals, molecular and cell biology, high throughput screening assays, immunodiagnostic assays, stem cells and antibodies. He is also experienced in inter partes reviews, reexaminations and interferences.

This presentation will focus on the patent landscape covering 3D printing in the life sciences.  In addition, the presentation will discuss limitations on recent trends regarding patent eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101, as well as the application of 35 USC § 271(e) research exemption to patent infringement in the context of bioprinted research tools.
