Séverine Le Gac's Biography



Séverine Le Gac, Professor, Applied Microfluidics for Bioengineering Research, University of Twente

Séverine Le Gac is a Professor at the University of Twente, The Netherlands, where she leads a team called “Applied Microfluidics for BioEngineering Research – AMBER”. Séverine Le Gac received her Engineer degree in chemistry (specialization biology) from the ESPCI (Paris, France) in 2000 and her PhD cum laude in 2004 in life sciences from the University of Lille (France). She has about 20 years experience in the field of microfluidics focusing on bioanalytical, biological and medical applications. Her current research interests include the development of microfluidic devices and organ-on-a-chip platforms for assisted reproductive technologies, cancer research and single cell analysis.

Prof. Le Gac is Associate Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Biomedical Microdevices (Springer Publishing Group), part of the advisory board of the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering (IOP Publisher) and of the editorial board of the open-access journal Micromachines (MDPI Publisher). Since 2018, she has also been Member of the Director Board of the CBMS Society (Chemical and Biological Microsystem Society; https://cbmsociety.org/), which is the leading scientific society in her field of microfluidics.

Organ-on-a-Chip Platforms for Assisted Reproductive Technologies

Organ-on-a-chip platforms are currently considered as the next-generation in vitro models for various fields of applications such as drug and toxicity screening, disease modeling, tissue regeneration, metabolic studies, etc. Key-advantages offered by these platforms compared to standard in vitro models are, for instance, the possibility to accurately control the cellular microenvironment and to implement dynamic culture conditions in a microfluidic format, to emulate the architecture and/or the function of targeted organs by combining specific microstructures with cells, and to stimulate the cells in the device, e.g., chemically, mechanically, electrically, with an excellent spatiotemporal control. In my presentation, I will present current work from our group in the field of organ-on-a-chip with a particular focus on the field of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), with devices for the in vitro culture of mammalian embryos, the in vitro production of bovine embryos (oviduct-on-a-chip platform) and the ex vivo culture of testis tissues.
