Nigel McMillan's Biography

Nigel McMillan, Associate Professor, Griffith University

Professor Nigel McMillan is the Director of the Molecular Basis of Disease Program at Griffith University. His laboratory investigates RNA interference for the treatment of viral diseases and cancers and has published in the area of RNAi in vivo delivery, RNAi for the treatment of cancers, and in development of bi- and tri-functional siRNAs. His laboratory recently uncovered a novel RNAi processing mechanism that allows the unmasking of RNAi-target genes to the immune system and is a new means to develop highly effective tumour-protective immune responses.

The main barrier to the clinical use of RNAi for respiratory viruses remains the lack of efficient delivery. Our stealth siRNA, delivery IV, bypasses the inflamed lung tissue and results in effective delivery, gene silencing and reduction in virus load.
