Joaquin Dopazo's Biography



Joaquin Dopazo, Head, Centro De Investigacion Principe Felipe

Dr. Joaquin Dopazo is the Head of the Computational Genomics Department at CIPF (Valencia, Spain), and also heads the Functional Genomics Node of National Institute of Bioinformatics (INB) and the Bioinformatics group (BIER) of the Center for Biomedical Research on Rare Diseases (CIBERER). He has a BSc in Chemistry (Universitat de Valencia, Spain in 1985) and a PhD in Biology (Universitat de Valencia, 1989) and has worked for different academic institutions (CNB, CNIO, CIPF) and private companies (GlaxoSmithKline). He has published more than 190 papers in international peer-reviewed journals. His interests revolve around functional genomics, genome analysis and systems biology. He has supervised some the largest and most cited resources for microarray data analysis over the web (http://www.gepas.org and http://www.babelomics.org). He has been one of the promoters of the Medical Genome Project (http://www.medicalgenomeproject.com).

The Medical Genome Project and the Spanish network for Rare Diseases fostered a large-scale sequencing project that involves the analysis of 1000 exomes (more than 800 sequenced to date) to find disease genes in many inherited diseases.
