Prof. Andreas K. Nüssler is a German native. He studied Pharmacy and human biology in
Germany and France. He received his PhD from University Paris VI, France in 1991. From
1991 to 1994 he worked as Research Assistant Prof. at Pittsburgh Medical School, USA.
Between 1994 & 2003, he was group leader in the experimental surgery unit at the University
of Ulm and the Charité in Berlin, Germany. Between 2003 & 2007 he worked as CSO and
Program Manager at Fresenius and its subsidiaries. Between 2007 and 2011 he was head of
R&D at the Technical University Munich. Since Sept. 2011 he fulltime joint the University
Tübingen where he is head of a newly formed research unit to coordinate clinical and basic
research in the department of traumatology. He has published over 250 peer-review papers,
book chapters, reviews and proceedings. He is reviewer for int. journals and organizations
and is involved in many national and int. research clusters. His major scientific interests are
the use of human liver cell culture models, AdMSCs-derived cells in aging and tissue
regeneration (in particularly liver regeneration) and their use in in-vitro metabolisms.

There is increasing evidence that mesenchymal stem cells can differentiate into hepatocyte-like cells. However many open questions remain in order to use these cells routinously in drug development.  The present paper will present advantages and disadvantages using MSCs in drug development.
