John Masters's Biography



John Masters, Professor, University College London

John Masters is Professor of Experimental Pathology at UCL and Editor-in-Chief of Cell Biology and Toxicology and has edited 7 volumes of Human Cell Culture (Springer). He chaired an ATCC Standard Development Committee developing a standard using STR profiling for the authentication of human cell lines, which in January 2012 became accredited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute).

Quality control demands that the donor origin of stem cell culture is confirmed using STR profiling. Approximately 20% of cell lines are derived from a different donor to that claimed, indicating the importance of stem cell authentication.
