John Masters's Biography



John Masters, Professor, University College London

John Masters is Professor of Experimental Pathology at UCL and Editor-in-Chief of Cell Biology and Toxicology and has edited 7 volumes of Human Cell Culture (Springer). He chaired an ATCC Standard Development Committee developing a standard using STR profiling for the authentication of human cell lines, which in January 2012 became accredited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute).

Up to 20% of human cell lines are derived from a different individual or species to that claimed. The presentation will describe how poor tissue culture practice can result in cross-contamination, the use of STR profiling to identify it and methods for preventing it happening in the laboratory.
