Bernhard Weigl, Principal Investigator, Flow Based Diagnostics, Intellectual Ventures/Global Good, University of Washington

Dr. Bernhard H Weigl is Principal Investigator at Intellectual Ventures/Global Good which is funded and led by Bill Gates, Microsoft Co-Founder.

Dr. Weigl is also Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington, Department of Bioengineering. Until recently he was a Senior Technology Officer at PATH, Portfolio Leader for Non-communicable Disease Diagnostics and the former Director of the National Institutes of Health-funded Center for Point-of-Care Diagnostics for Global Health. Dr. Weigl led the PATH Diagnostics Group where he oversaw global health diagnostics programs funded by a variety of sources such as NIAID and NIBIB, the Grand Challenges program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, and the PATH Health Innovation Portfolio. His work focuses on diagnostic technology R&D including strip-based immunoassays, instrument-free molecular assays, and a variety of isothermal amplification assays for low resource settings. Before joining PATH, both at the University of Washington and at Micronics, Inc. (Redmond, Washington, where he was a scientific cofounder; Micronics is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America), Dr. Weigl led teams that developed both instrument-based and stand-alone microfluidic medical diagnostic disposables. His scientific interests include traditional and paper-based microfluidics as well as any diagnostic platform that allow simplification and integration of previously complex assays. As chronic diseases, and especially diabetes, are emerging as a major health threat in developing countries he is now also focusing on their diagnosis, screening, and treatment. Other areas of interest include diagnostics-related health systems topics such as more rational diagnostic algorithms, and evaluation and selection of the most appropriate diagnostic tool for a particular application using metrics beyond sensitivity and specificity. He has led projects across the diagnostics value chain, from invention and proof of principle though product introduction and support. He received his M.Sc (Mag. rer. nat.) and Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) from Karl-Franzens-University Graz and has completed post-doctoral studies at the University of Southampton and the University of Washington. He has authored more than 100 scientific papers and is an inventor on over 80 US patents and patent applications.

The emergence of point-of-care diagnostics specifically designed for low-resource settings coupled with the rapid increase in need for routine care of patients with chronic diseases should prompt reconsideration of how health care can be delivered most beneficially and cost-effectively in developing countries. Bolstering support for primary care to provide rapid and appropriate integrated acute and chronic care treatment may be a possible solution. Point-of-Care (POC) diagnostics can empower local and primary care providers and enable them to make better clinical decisions. This talk explores the opportunity for point-of-care diagnostics to strengthen primary care and chronic disease diagnosis and management in a low-resource setting (LRS) to deliver appropriate, consistent, and integrated care. We analyze the requirements of resource-appropriate chronic disease care, the characteristics of POC diagnostics in LRS vs the developed world, the many roles of diagnostics in the care continuum in LRS, as well as the process and economics of developing LRS-compatible POC diagnostics. We will also discuss a number of examples of POC diagnostics for low resource settings under development by PATH and its partners including screening and diagnostic devices for gestational and type 2 diabetes, preeclampsia, cardiovascular disease, and breast and cervical cancer.
