Saif Khan's Biography



Saif Khan, Associate Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore

Dr. Saif A. Khan obtained a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering at the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), Mumbai where he was the university gold medallist. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006, where he was a Presidential Fellow. In 2006, he joined the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. His research group at NUS develops new micro-scale process concepts for the sustainable continuous manufacture of chemicals and advanced materials, in ways that cannot be realized via conventional large-scale processes. Dr. Khan currently serves on the Editorial Board of the AIP journal ‘Biomicrofluidics’ and as a scientific editor of the RSC journal ‘Reaction Chemistry and Engineering’. He has also co-founded two start-up companies focused on advanced materials manufacture and opthalmic drug delivery.

This presentation will focus on the development of advanced manufacturing processes based on microfluidic technology, which bridge both primary and secondary pharmaceutical manufacturing, while also enabling novel ways to envision the final drug product. In particular, recent research at the National University of Singapore on the development of microfluidics-based crystallization and formulation processes, which allows the manufacture of spherical microparticles with remarkably precise control over the solid form of the drug substance, will be discussed. Application of the developed processes to both model and commercial API molecules, and their combinations with several excipients, will be highlighted. The presentation will conclude with an outline of the challenges and opportunities.
