Steven Gray's Biography



Steven Gray, Senior Clinical Scientist, St. James’s Hospital & Trinity College Dublin

Dr Steven Gray received his BA and MSc at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) and his PhD at the Karolinska Institute (Sweden). He subsequently conducted research in the Van Andel Research Institute (USA), Harvard Medical School (USA), the German Cancer Research Centre (Germany) and the Hagedorn Research Institute (Denmark), before returning to Ireland to work at St James’s Hospital. Throughout this period Dr Gray has exclusively studied the role of epigenetics in disease, with a specific focus on the potential therapeutic role of histone deacetylase inhibitors in the treatment of neurodegeneration, diabetes and cancer, particularly thoracic malignancy.

Epigenetic drugs and chemotherapy can reactivate epigenetically silenced genes with either “good” or “bad” consequences. Candidate epigenetic markers may be a key factor in stratifying patients for therapy and/or predicting response to therapy.
