Jean-François Hocquette, Director of Herbivore Unit, INRA

JF Hocquette graduated as an Engineer in Agronomy and received a PhD in Endocrinology from the University of Paris XI. Since 1991, JF Hocquette has been a research scientist at the National Institute of Agricultural Research. In 1999, he was appointed head of the "Muscle Growth and Metabolism" and from 2007 to 2010 Director of the Herbivore Research Unit. JF Hocquette is involved in the activity of the Cattle Commission of the European Association for Animal Production. In 2005, he edited a book entitled “Indicators of milk and beef quality”. He is also a member of the French Meat Academy.

Many genomic markers of beef tenderness were identified but they are often specific to muscle type, animal type or environmental conditions. However, genes related to the heat shock protein family or muscle characteristics are potential markers of beef tenderness.
