Niklas Mattsson, Medical Doctor & Researcher, Sahlgrens University Hospital

Dr Mattsson is a medical doctor and researcher at the Clinical Neurochemistry Laboratory, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg/Mölndal, Sweden, where he performs specialized laboratory investigations for neurological diseases.

He received his medical education in Lund and Gothenburg in Sweden and did his doctorate studies at the University of Gothenburg in the research group of Kaj Blennow and Henrik Zetterberg on cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for axonal degeneration and amyloid metabolism in Alzheimer’s disease, neuroinflammation and inborn errors of metabolism.

His current research is focused on the standardization of cerebrospinal fluid biomarker measurements on an international level within the Alzheimer’s Association quality control program and other initiatives, and within Sweden, where he is an expert consultant for the national laboratory quality assurance organization (EQUALIS). He also works on identification and validation of novel biomarkers for disease progression and effects of disease-modifying therapies.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers may be used for molecular diagnostics of several diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. They are used in clinical routine, research and drug development. To support the standardization of CSF biomarkers, a global external quality control program was recently initiated.
