Sudha Warrier's Biography

Sudha Warrier, Associate Professor, Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine

Dr Sudha Warrier, Associate Professor, Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Manipal University, has been in the field of adult stem cells and cancer stem cells for the past 8 years. She was awarded the position of Visiting Associate Professor, Curtin University in April, 2014. Her key areas of interest include identifying novel inhibitors for targeting cancer stem cells and in identifying unique signature for the cancer stem cell phenotype, differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells to cardiac lineage for cardiac restoration and protection, islet cell differentiation and immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells. In collaboration with Prof Arunasalam Dharmarajan of Curtin University, she has studied the role of Wnt antagonist, sFRP4 mediated chemosensitization of glioma stem cells to chemotherapeutics. Her group is presently involved in studying the mechanisms of Wnt regulation in regulating cardiovascular regeneration. She is the recipient of research funding from the Dept of Biotechnology and Indian Council of Medical Research, Stem Cell panels and she has authored research articles in stem cells and cancers and is the reviewer of journals such as PLoS One, Oncogene, Biology of Reproduction etc. She is actively involved in mentoring students for research projects for PhD, M Tech, MPhil and Master’s programs in projects related to drug discovery and Wnt mediated chemoresistance of cancer stem cells from solid tumors, Wnt regulation and epigenetics of cardiac and endothelial regeneration from mesenchymal stem cells. Dr Sudha Warrier obtained her PhD in 2002 from University of Madras, India in invertebrate reproductive biology. She underwent postdoctoral training (2002-2005) in Duke University, North Carolina, and in the Medical College of Ohio in cancer biology, hypertension proteomics and stem cell biology.

This presentation will explore the effect of the Wnt antagonist, secreted EMT in CSCs in gliomas. It will also highlight how sFRP4 acts through the Wnt- ß-Catenin and the Wnt- calcium pathways in inhibiting CSCs. Further, it will discuss about designing better targeted strategies to improve chemo-response and eventually eliminate glioblastoma CSCs.
