Birgit Raddatz's Biography

Birgit Raddatz, Clinical Laboratory Geneticist, University Medical Center Groningen

Dr Birgit Sikkema-Raddatz is a board certified clinical laboratory geneticist at the University Medical Center in Groningen (The Netherlands) department of Genetics. As a principal scientist of the Development and Innovation section, her main goal is to translate new knowledge and technology into clinical genetic practice. Several gene panels were designed (i.e. for patients with different types of hereditary cardiomyopathies, inherited cancer, epilepsy) and applied for targeted next generation sequencing into diagnostics. Together with her team, she has demonstrated that targeted re-sequencing can replace Sanger sequencing. She is also working on non-invasive prenatal testing using next-generation sequencing.

Various targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) gene-panels for heterogeneous diseases were designed and implemented into clinical diagnostics that account for the majority of our current requests. The sensitivity and specificity equals Sanger sequencing whereas the diagnostic yield is significantly increased.
