Norman Ratcliffe's Biography

Norman Ratcliffe, Professor, University of the West of England

For over 20years Norman Ratcliffe has worked for a range of companies in the electronics, aerospace and nuclear industries as well as in the agri-food and medical diagnostics areas particularly specialising in the gas/volatile analysis area. Medical areas particularly include the rapid diagnosis of gastro-intestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, infectious diseases of the gut e.g. hospital acquired infections and diseases of the urinary tract particularly infections, prostate and bladder cancer, using electronic nose technology and GCMS for analysing breath, stool, saliva and urine.
Research in the non-gas analysis areas includes conducting polymer syntheses, micro organisms for organic synthesis and nano-magnetic particles for environmental clean-up, and jet fuel additives.

Volatile analyses for disease diagnoses is an emerging science. This is due to several factors such as  improved, sensitive  analytical technology and the non invasive nature of the test procedures. It is not only humans, but animals which could benefit by this approach. This lecture will review the past, present and will explore the future of spectrometers, electronic noses and other technologies for analysing breath, saliva, skin, stool and urine for diagnosing diseases using volatile detection.
