Andrea Malaspina, Clinical Senior Lecturer, Queen Mary University of London

Dr Andrea Malaspina is a Consultant Neurologist and a Senior Lecturer at the Neuroscience and Trauma Centre, Blizard Institute, QMUL, London. He is the Director of a care and research centre for MND, serving North-East London and Essex and integrated within the wider UCL-partners clinical and research network. He has established a multi-centre research program to look at neurodegenerative disorders as developing entities, through longitudinal and orthogonal biobanking and clinical data collection from MND patients and from a number of neuromuscular and neurodegenerative conditions. He has developed analytical tools for the effective measurement of molecular signals of disease progression and used these to efficiently stratify subset of patients by phenotypic expression and rate of disease progression. Her has extended the translational focus of his research to the study of the immune response to neurodegeneration at a systemic level to inform biomarkers discovery and also developed research into the propensity of structural proteins like neurofilaments to aggregate in biological fluids mirroring aggregation in the CNS.
