Toni Cathomen's Biography

Toni Cathomen, Director, University Medical Center Freiburg

Toni Cathomen is Professor and Director of the Institute for Cell and Gene Therapy (IZG) at the University Medical Center Freiburg, Germany. The IZG provides the Medical Center with blood products and all transfusion and transplantation related diagnostic laboratory services. The goals of the institute’s research efforts are (i) to further develop safe genome editing tools (incl. TALENs, CRISPR/Cas9) for therapeutic applications in human stem cells, (ii) to develop disease models and cell therapies based on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and (iii) to translate cell and gene therapy efforts into the clinic.

TALENs and CRISPR/Cas9-based nucleases are powerful tools for targeted gene editing in primary cells. Our interest in applying designer nucleases for therapeutic applications allowed us to define parameters that affect the genome-wide specificity of these customized nucleases and to develop GMP-compatible protocols for genome engineering in human stem cells.
