Claus Duschl's Biography



Claus Duschl, Head, Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering

Claus Duschl is head of the department *Cellular Biotechnology &
Biochips* at the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering in Potsdam, Germany. His research group develops novel methods for the manipulation and analysis of tiniest samples of biological material. He received his diploma degree in Physics at the Technical University of Munich, where he also performed his doctoral thesis in Biophysics.
Besides his industrial activities as cofounder and research director of various Biotech companies, he held positions at the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, at the University of Cambridge, UK, and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.

High-frequency electromagnetic fields in microfluidic systems are utilised (i) for the production of hybrid cells through the fusion of defined cell pairs and, (ii) for the characterization of the mechanical properties of cells for diagnostic purposes.
