Jef Hooyberghs's Biography



Jef Hooyberghs, Project Manager, Flemish Institute for Technological Research

Dr. Jef Hooyberghs received a M.S. in 1998 at the University of Leuven and obtained a PhD in Physics via FWO scholarship in 2002 at Hasselt University, Belgium. Since 2003 he is R&D employee at VITO (Flemish Institute for Technological Research) and since 2006 professor at Hasselt University. At VITO he is currently head of the team of applied bio&molecular systems which has a research focus on biomarker discovery & detection and nano-bio interactions. His research focus is on the thermodynamics of nucleic acid interactions and the application of it in biodetection.

The presentation will show how the use of microarrays permits the quantification of free energy parameters of DNA hybridization. As an application the detection of point mutations will be discussed together with a relevant case study in medical diagnostics.
