Daniel Hill's Biography

Daniel Hill, Project Coordinator, Universitat De Valencia

Daniel Hill was born in Cornwall, UK and following his Bsc (Hons) Physics degree (University of Leeds), from researching silicon based particle detectors for his MPhil in particle physics (University of Liverpool) he developed an interest in semiconductor based materials and optoelectronics devices. After completing his PhD in semiconductor materials (University of Liverpool) he gained silicon fabrication experience at Philips Semiconductors before returning to research. Since 2006 he has worked in biophotonics, being awarded the FP7 InTopSens, FP7 Positive and FP7 CanDo projects as well as coordinating the FP6 SABIO project. In 2011 he joined the UMDO group (University of Valencia) focussing on the control of novel matter and electromagnetic wave interactions arising from nanostructuring of photonic and plasmonic materials for added functionality in optical biosensors. A member of the IEEE, SPIE, and IOP, and a Chartered Physicist, he regularly contributes to International Journals and Conferences.

Silicon nanophotonic sensors are attractive for analytical biosensing due to their small footprint, high Q-factors, and compatibility with on-chip optics and microfluidics enabling integrated sensor arrays for compact lab-on-chip applications. Here we review developments over the past 5 years with a focus on three European collaborations: SABIO, InTopSens and CanDo.
