R Nageswara Rao, Chief Scientist/Head, Analytical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology

Dr. R.Nageswara Rao is a chief scientist working in Analytical Chemistry Division of Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad. He obtained his Ph.D in chemistry from Osmania University, Hyderabad, has more than 35 years of association with pharmaceutical research handling various R&D projects of IICT in development of chromatographic, spectroscopic and computer-assisted analytical methods for process development and quality assurance of drugs & pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals which includes generation analytical data for drug master files for registration purposes. He has published about 180 research papers, which include four book chapters, ten review articles and presented more than 95 papers in national and international seminars/symposia. Visited the Universities of Amsterdam, Netherlands (1998),Jena, Germany (2005), Washington DC,USA(2009) and Daejeon, South Korea (2010). He is a member of professional bodies viz., President(2008-2011), secretary (1994-1999) & Life Member of ISAS Hyderabad Chapter, Life Member of OTAI, Southern Zone, Hyderabad, member of technical committees viz., CFE, AP Pollution Control Board, Task Force Pharma Education in AP, PEMC,CCRUM, New Delhi and BIS, New-Delhi, Advisor, UPSC Selection Board, Member, Selection Committee, Kolhapur university. He is a recognised guide for supervising the research work of Ph.D students of various Universities. Twenty (20) of his students were awarded Ph.D and 10 are working at present. He has received several honours and awards which include IDMA Research Award(1987),ISAS Best Paper Presentation Award(1993), IICT Annual Day Awards for Publications (1990,1992,1994), Dr.Husain Zaheer Memorial Award (1997), IDMA Outstanding Pharmaceutical Analyst Award (2004), German Academic Exchange (DAAD) Fellowship (2005), Marquis Who’s Who in the World (2006) and Brain Pool Fellowship(2010).

In this talk, major mechanisms of chemical decomposition of pharmaceuticals including hydrolysis/dehydration, oxidation, isomerization/epimerization, decarboxylation, rearrangements, dimerization/polymerization, and photolysis and transformation products involving reactions with excipients/salt forms will be discussed. The use of advanced analytical techniques in proposing/predicting the reaction mechanisms of pharmaceutical degradations will also be covered.
