Vinod Scaria's Biography

Vinod Scaria, Scientist, Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology

Vinod Scaria is a scientist at the CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology. He is a clinician turned computational biologist with research interests in personal and translational genomics and genome informatics. He is interested in understanding the function and organisation of non-coding RNAs, and how genomic variations could potentially impact them. He is also involved in creating novel methods and resources for analysis and annotation of genomes and understanding the functional impact of genomic variations. He has used adopted novel and creative strategies like the use of social media and participation of large number of undergraduate students in collaborative projects to accelerate genome annotation and co-creation resources for genome annotation.

This presentation, describes the experiences with personal genome sequencing and use of genomics approaches and model systems. The talk also highlights a platforms for systematic curation of information and crowdsourcing highly specialised tasks online through CrowdOmics platform. Systematic annotation of datasets for personalised genomics for the OpenPGx consortium and analytical tasks through the 2C4C programme for Cheminformatics could be crowdsourced through the platform. The talk would also discuss the way forward, detailing the ongoing initiatives including the GUaRDIAN Consortium involving a large clinical network towards realising the dream.
