Anthony Saleh's Biography



Anthony Saleh, IRTA scientist, NIDCD/NIH

Dr. Saleh is a Ph.D. with more than 10 years of experience in biochemistry and nucleic acid chemistry. He was awarded his BS with honors in biochemistry from St. Bonaventure University in 2001. He then received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 2008 for his work designing high throughput RNA SELEX based assays to identify catalytic peptide-nucleotide conjugates as antisense drugs. He then took a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in the Department of Radiation Oncology. His work on microRNA role in radiation therapy was recognized by the American Association for Cancer Research in 2010. In 2011, he joined the National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorders Tumor Biology section as an intramural research fellow and has coordinated a new facility set-up for next generation sequencing utilizing SOLiD parallel sequencing technology. Currently, Dr. Saleh's research focuses on RNA/DNA sequence profiling of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas with the goal of identifying distinct subsets, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets.

Functional comparison of microRNA expression signatures of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cell lines and tumor specimens has been used to identify oncogene driven microRNA expression patterns that repress the p53 and Notch signaling pathways.
