Clemens Holzer's Biography

Clemens Holzer, Head, University of Leoben

Prof. Holzer studied polymer engineering and science at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben / Austria and finished there also his phD studies on polymer processing. Eight years he worked in Switzer-land in the industry in the field of polymer processing, especially compounding and extrusion. Until 2009 he was deputy head of the Institute of Polymer Nanotechnology, Switzerland. Main research focus were on compounding of thermoplastic nanocomposites and injection moulding of nanostructures. Since 2009 he is head of the Department of Polymer Engineering and Science and head of the Chair of Polymer Processing at Leoben. The main research themes are injection moulding, extrusion, compounding, simulation and determination of material data.

The success of stem cell based tissue engineering and therapeutic approaches is dependent on the standardized up-scaling, maintenance and possibly differentiation of high grade stem cells in vitro. We have identified a range of polymers that optimize stem cell viability and proliferation in vitro and can thereby be further utilised as substrates for expansion and tissue engineering approaches.
