Eugenio Fava's Biography



Eugenio Fava, Head of Scientific Facilities and Services & Group Leader System Neuroscience, Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen e.V.

Dr. Fava's research has been focused on the neurodegenerative field and the use of advanced cell based technique to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in cell function and pathology. Dr Fava has been actively involved in the use and development of advanced microscopy techniques to be applied to cell-based assays first at the university of Konstanz. Beginning of 2000 Dr Fava joined the Toxicology Unit of Medical Research Council in Leicester where he was actively involved in the emerging field of high content imaging and where he established a facility based on kinetic automated microscope. In 2004 Dr Fava joined the Max Plank Institute for Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden where he was involved in the establishment of the High Content Screening Facility. As part of these activities Dr Fava was key in the setting up and running of the HCS facility and in particular on the development of innovative cell-based assays implementing high content multiplexing. In 2009 Dr Fava joined the newly founded German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn where he has a double appointment has Head of Scientific Facilities and Services and Group leader for system biology. Here Dr Fava established a novel platform for high content imaging and screening with the aim to innovate technologies on both technology and cell-based assays. Dr Fava is now focusing his scientific activities in the integration of high content data with computational and research methods to develop new methods to be applied to cell biology and early drug discovery.

HCS has enabled scientists to generate quantitative data from images. Here we discuss how to make use of this data by using computational methods to go beyond a phenotypic description of hits.
