Jane Rogers's Biography

Jane Rogers, Director, The Genome Analysis Centre

Dr Jane Rogers has worked at the forefront of genomics research for the past twenty years. She trained initially as a biochemist, gaining a PhD from Southampton University in 1972, and pursued interests in membrane biology and intracellular signaling at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands and Cambridge University, UK. In 1990 she joined the Medical Research Council as a Scientific Administrator and moved in 1992 to work with Sir John Sulston in the establishment of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Jane was Head of Sequencing at the Institute and managed the UK’s contributions to the Human Genome Project and other vertebrate genomes, plant genomes Arabidopsis thaliana, Medicago truncatula and tomato, and the production of genome sequences for many human pathogens. From 2008-2013 she served as the first director of The Genome Analysis Centre in Norwich, which was founded with support from the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. Whilst at TGAC, she led the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC) initiative to generate a chromosome-based survey sequence of the wheat genome and now works with the IWGSC to accelerate the production of a high utility reference sequence for wheat.
