Steven Kushner's Biography

Steven Kushner, Professor and Chair of Neurobiological Psychiatry, Erasmus University Medical Center

Steven Kushner is Professor and Chair of Neurobiological Psychiatry at the Erasmus University Medical Center (The Netherlands). He completed his undergraduate degree summa cum laude at the University of Pennsylvania, an M.D. and Ph.D. through a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) Fellowship at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). His Ph.D. thesis research in the laboratory of Alcino Silva was supported by an NIH National Research Service Award (NRSA) to investigate fundamental mechanisms of learning. He subsequently completed a psychiatry residency at Columbia University Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, after which he joined the Department of Psychiatry at the Erasmus MC Rotterdam where he is now Professor of Neurobiological Psychiatry. He is the Coordinator of the Institute for human Organ and Disease Model Technologies (hDMT) brain-on-a-chip program, founding member of the Erasmus MC ENCORE Center for Neurodevelopmental Disorders, co-Director of the Academic Center of Excellence for Population Neuroscience, past-Chair of the 2016 Dutch Neuroscience Meeting, and Executive Committee Member of the European Molecular and Cellular Cognition Society (EMCCS).

There is yet no satisfying evidence-based biological mechanism for any psychiatric disorder, likely due to the extraordinary complexity of the brain and the difficulties inherent in studying human neurophysiology. Towards the goal of establishing standardized methods for investigating the pathophysiology of human brain disorders, we have developed novel state-of-the-art methods for differentiating physiologically active three-dimensional (3D) neuronal networks from human patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells, offering the unique opportunity to investigate the molecular and cellular pathophysiology of disease initiation and progression. In my lecture, I will discuss the implementation of this methodology and the electrophysiological properties of the resulting neuronal networks.  Moreover, I will describe the successful application of this approach for revealing fundamental insights into the neurobiology of schizophrenia using a family-based design supported by next-generation sequencing.
