This market report summarizes the results of HTStec’s global pharma, biotech and academic screening web-based benchmarking survey on cell-based assays carried out in October 2007. The objectives were to gain better awareness of the metrics behind current and future cell-based assay screening, to learn how the market is evolving, if new bottlenecks exist and how end users are implementing changes to enhance their productivity.

Amongst the areas in the questionnaire were the proportion of primary screens that are cell-based; number of primary cell-based screens, average numbers of samples per screen, main bottlenecks today; obstacles that have proven major hurdles; level of automation applied to cell-based assays; use of frozen ready-to-screen aliquots and their source; use of suspension cells; annual consumable operating budgets and their breakdown into item groups purchased. In addition user satisfaction with automated systems, assay/reagent technologies and liquid handling tools for cell-based assays was gauged. Feedback was also solicited for the situation and 2007 and best estimates or plans for 2009.
