This market report summarizes the results of HTStec’s second global pharma and biotech web-based benchmarking survey on dispense and imaging (D & I) instruments and assays carried out in October 2007.

The study was initiated by HTSTec to comprehensively document the current status, future needs and user requirements for D & I instruments, readouts and assays. In particular the study was aimed at providing supporting evidence as to how the industry’s use of D&I instruments and assays will evolve over the coming years.

The survey included the following aspects of D&I instruments and assays, the percentage of D&I data points and screens undertaken using fluorescence readouts; the use and satisfaction with D&I assay kits, dyes and cell lines; the percentage of D&I assays undertaken using adherent cells; the use of recombinant, transient cell lines or primary cells; the use of different modes of assay operation; use of different microplate formats for D&I assays; challenges encountered in transitioning to flash luminescence D&I assays; preferred type of D&I instrument platform; plans to purchase new instruments over the next few years; features most desired in next generation instrumentation. In the majority of questions, feedback was obtained separately for both fluorescence and flash luminescence D&I readouts as used in 2007 together with best estimates for the future.
