GS obtained his Ph.D. in Organofluorine Chemistry at Durham, under the supervision of Prof. R.D. Chambers. After a period as a postdoctoral research fellow in the laboratories of Prof. George Olah (USC), he transferred back to Durham. Following post-doctoral support from F2 Chemicals Ltd. (BNFL), he was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship, which began in October 1996. He was appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Chemistry at Durham in March 2001, Senior Lecturer in October 2004 and promoted to Chair beginning in October 2008. He has published over 130 research papers, review articles and patent applications, mainly in the field of organofluorine chemistry.
