Ramcharan Bhattacharya, Professor & Principal Scientist

Dr Ramcharan Bhattacharya is an agricultural scientist and at present the Professor of the teaching discipline of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology at National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology, New Delhi, India. He completed his graduation in agriculture (Hons) from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal and post-graduation in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology. He completed his Ph.D from Post Graduate School of Indian Agricultural Research Institute in the year 2000 and subsequently did his postdoctoral research at Washington State University, USA.
In his research endeavor he has contributed significantly to Brassica biotechnology programme over the last 20 years. He is heading the group working on Brassica improvement at NRCPB and playing important role in various assignments at the national level. Some of his research accomplishments include unraveling the regulation of immunity genes in mustard, identification of defense elicitor genes in mustard, developing RNAi mediated resistance against aphids, high efficiency genetic transformation and gene expression system in Brassica etc. He has published several research papers, book chapters and other scientific articles and received two national awards. Apart from his research accomplishments, he has contributed in post graduate teaching of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology with distinction and is presently a member of the National Core Group (NCG) for post graduate curriculum in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology across NARES and SAUs.
