Darin Detwiler,
Professor
Dr. Detwiler has over 20 years of experience with US federal, state, and local policymaking process and government relations as a policy coordinator, consultant, and lecturer on food safety and defense issues. As a policy advisor, he has long served as issue expert and developed complex political and industry relationships. Dr. Detwiler is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Northeastern University, where he is the Director of Regulatory Affairs of Food and Food Industry.
Dr. Detwiler left a career as a submarine nuclear mechanical engineer in the US Navy after the loss of his young son to E.coli during the landmark “Jack in the Box” outbreak in 1993. Resolved to take action, he gained an impressive track record of involvement in federal food policy reform - testifying before Congress on the state of food safety and working with both the USDA and the FDA to strengthen food safety regulations. The Secretary of Agriculture appointed Dr. Detwiler to serve two terms as a USDA regulatory policy advisor on the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection. He also served as the Senior Policy Coordinator for STOP Foodborne Illness, a national nonprofit, public health organization dedicated to the prevention of illness and death from foodborne pathogens. Key products of his tireless efforts with the USDA include an increased focus on consumer education, the federally mandated Food Safe Handling Instructions labels, and labeling of Mechanically Tenderized Beef. His work with the FDA includes support for public meetings, involvement in consumer education, and the inclusion of victims and consumer advocates as stakeholder voices in the FDA’s development of rules for the Food Safety Modernization Act.
Dr. Detwiler speaks at various FDA and industry trainings and before audiences at food policy events across the country and abroad. In addition to his regular column in a food industry magazine, Detwiler is quoted frequently as a food policy expert in major national news and trade outlets, both print and broadcast.
