Caifu Chen's Biography



Caifu Chen, Sr. Vice President, R&D

Caifu has 20+ years of biotech R&D and academic research experiences in molecular genetics & genomics focusing on PCR & NextGen Sequencing technology/application development. As SVP of R&D, he is responsible for building strong R&D teams and core capabilities at IDT and developing killer genomic applications in NGS & qPCR. Prior to IDT, he was VP of Genetic Applications R&D at Thermo Fisher Scientific and responsible for PCR and sequencing new product and application development for RUO, LDT, and CE-IVD. In 2011, Caifu joined Pall Corporation as VP of Molecular Biology R&D and developed rapid microbial detection assays for process monitoring in Biopharm, Food, and Beverage. In 1998, Caifu joined Applied Biosystems, where he held positions from Scientists to Sr. Director. He has invented a number of novel assay technologies including TaqMan MicroRNA, CastPCR & SNPlex assays for expression profiling, rare mutation detection or SNP genotyping. He and his team have developed a wide range of TaqMan qPCR/dPCR assays for genomic research, diagnostics and applied markets. He has established broad & productive collaborations with academic institutes and biotech companies in microRNAs, stem cells, cancer, CNVs and single cell analysis. Before joining Applied Biosystems, he received his postdoctoral training at Harvard Institute of Human Genetics and Ph.D. in Genetics at University of Missouri-Columbia. Caifu is an active member of AACR and ASHG, the author of >50 peer-reviewed papers, 8 book chapters, holder of 27 patents or patent publications, invited speakers for scientific conferences, reviewer for peer-reviewed scientific journals, and winners of numerous awards. Before he came to USA, he was an Assistant Professor at Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, China.
