Francesco Dal Dosso's Biography

Francesco Dal Dosso, Innovation Manager

Dr. Francesco Dal Dosso holds an MSc in Biomedical Engineering and obtained his PhD at the Biosensors group in Bioscience Engineering at KU Leuven in 2018. After one year as postdoctoral researcher, he was appointed as Innovation Manager (permanent staff) at the KU Leuven, the most innovative university in Europe (and 7th in the world). His main research interests involve novel concepts for point-of-care in vitro diagnostics. In particular, he was pioneer in developing the innovative (i)SIMPLE self-powered microfluidic platform and integrating different bioassay strategies (e.g. digital assays, enzymatic assays) for the detection of different biomarkers. His expertise includes microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip, point-of-care test, immuno- and DNA-based assay, microfabrication and surface functionalization. As Innovation Manager, he is responsible for the valorization of the research done not only at the Biosensors group (Prof. Jeroen Lammertyn) but also at the Therapeutic and Diagnostic Antibodies group (Prof. Paul Declerck) and at the Laboratory for Thrombosis Research (Prof. Karen Vanhoorelbeke) under the umbrella of the IDiaLiST (Integrated Diagnostic and Life Science Research Tools) consortium he coordinates. In this context, he is scouting for new exploitation opportunities such as spin-off creation, industrial collaborations, patent applications and licensing. He has been involved in writing and management/coordination of >10 (inter)national project funding proposals (IWT, KU Leuven, FWO, IMI, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) as well as bilateral agreement with world-leading diagnostics and pharma companies. He is (co-)author of > 25 peer reviewed research papers and conference contributions (Biosensors, MicroTAS) and inventor of two patents related to the (i)SIMPLE technology.
