Peter Benn's Biography



Peter Benn, Professor Emeritus, Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences

Peter Benn completed his undergraduate degree at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, received a PhD from the University of Birmingham, England, and post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a DSc degree from the University of St Andrews. For the past 25 years he has been a faculty member at the University of Connecticut Health Center and is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences. Clinical responsibilities have included oversight of the cytogenetics and prenatal screening laboratories. His research interests have focused on prenatal testing and diagnosis, most recently involving the introduction of non-invasive prenatal testing. Dr Benn chaired the International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis (ISPD)’s Special Interest Group (SIG) for Prenatal Screening. He has also chaired ISPD’s Committee for Chromosome Abnormality Screening which developed Position Statements for non-invasive prenatal screening.
