A. C. Matin,
Professor
Professor Matin has been on Stanford faculty since 1975. He did his Ph.D. with distinction from University of California, Los Angeles, then spent four years at the State university of Groningen as Research Officer, First Class, before joining Stanford. He has worked in several areas, including metabolic regulation, bacterial stress response, mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in bacteria and their biofilms, and the effect of space microgravity on bacterial resistance and virulence. His work on improving bacteria for bioremediation of environmental carcinogens led to the discovery of bacterial enzymes that can activate reductive prodrugs, and the discovery of the prodrug CNOB, which is the major topic of his current research. After working with nanoparticles and liposomes for delivery of the gene encoding the CNOB activating enzyme, his work settled on the use of extracellular vesicles for this purpose. He is an elected fellow of American Academy of Microbiology and has served on many prestigious panels, including Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. He has been a frequent invited speaker and is recipient of numerous awards. Hi hobbies include walking, billiards and reading.
