Jean-Christophe Monbaliu's Biography

Jean-Christophe Monbaliu, Professor, Center for Integrated Technology and Organic Synthesis

Jean-Christophe M. Monbaliu is an organic chemist who was trained at the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium (PhD, 2008). After several postdoctoral experiences at world-leading institutions (Ghent University; University of Florida; Massachusetts Institute of Technology), he came back to Belgium with a rich background in organic synthesis, chemical engineering, and flow process technologies. He settled at the University of Liège in 2013, where he created the Center for Integrated Technology and Organic Synthesis. He is currently Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Liège. He also serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Flow Chemistry. He also leads the first European Corning® Advanced-Flow™ Reactor Qualified Lab. In 2022, Monbaliu founded FloW4all, a Flow Technology Platform in Wallonia that focuses on training, technology transfer, and services. Additionally, in 2023, he took on the role of Principal Investigator at the WEL Research Institute, where he leads efforts to integrate AI and quantum chemistry for advancements in flow processes. Research interests at CiTOS revolve around synthetic organic chemistry but are multidisciplinary in essence and aim at (a) designing cheaper and more efficient routes for the preparation of high value-added chemicals such as active pharmaceutical ingredients; (b) accelerating the transition from petrobased to biobased strategies and (c) developing efficient processes with a lower environmental impact.
