Ramesh Ramanathan, Medical Oncologist

Dr. Ramesh K. Ramanathan is a medical oncologist at the Mayo Clinic, (Arizona campus) and serves as the program head for GI Oncology. He also holds an appointment as Clinical Professor at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGEN) in Phoenix, AZ. Prior to this appointment, he was the medical director of the Virginia. G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical trials (2007-2014) and at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute from 1996-2007.

Dr. Ramanathan’s research interests are in new drug development of targeted agents, and he specializes in the treatment of GI cancers. Over the last 15 years, Dr. Ramanathan has been involved in the development of a number of new drugs and treatments for colon, pancreatic and GI cancers. In particular, Dr Ramanathan was involved in the development and approval of oxaliplatin for colon cancer and the nab-paclitaxel/gemcitabine regimen for pancreatic cancer. Dr. Ramanathan has authored or coauthored more than 200 abstracts, 150 manuscripts and book chapters. He also serves as GI committee member for SWOG, and is a Editorial Board member for Clinical Cancer Research, Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology, Gastrointestinal Cancer Research and is an ad hoc reviewer for a number of other journals.
