Danijel Kikelj's Biography



Danijel Kikelj, Professor

Dr Danijel Kikelj is Professor of medicinal chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He graduated in pharmacy at the University of Ljubljana and obtained his doctoral degree in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, in 1988. His scientific interest includes design and synthesis of peptidomimetics, structure based design of antithrombotic and antibacterial compounds, designed multiple ligands, and design and synthesis of pharmaceutical leads based on marine bioactive compounds. Since 2010, he is Coordinator in EU 7th Framework Programme Project MAREX (Exploring Marine Resources for Bioactive Compounds: From Discovery to Sustainable Production and industrial Applications) at partner institution, University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Pharmacy. Since 2011, he is Coordinator of action COST CM 1106 Chemical Approaches to targeting Drug Resistance to Cancer, Stem Cells for Slovenia. Since 2016, he is Partner in Marie Sklodowska Curie ETN INTEGRATE (Interdisciplinary Training Network for validation of Gram-Negative Antibacterial Targets). He has authored over 100 papers in international journals, several international patents and three monographs in the series Houben-Weyl Methods of organic chemistry and Science of synthesis: Houben-Weyl methods of molecular transformations. He has Mentored 10 successfully completed PhD theses. Dr Kikelj is a member of European Peptide Society, European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry, Slovenian Pharmaceutical Sociaty, Slovenian Chemical Society and Member of Editorial Boards of Acta Chimica Slovenica, Acta Pharmaceutica, Current Medicinal Chemistry, Arkivoc, Chemical Biology and Drug Design.
