Thomas Burg's Biography

Thomas Burg, Group Leader

Dr. Thomas P. Burg received the dipl.-phys. degree in physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He subsequently worked as a research associate in Biological Engineering at MIT before being appointed as a Max Planck Research Group Leader at the MPI for Biophysical Chemistry (Göttingen, Germany) in 2009. The Burg Laboratory is interested in new methods based on micro- and nanotechnology for physical measurements and precision manipulations at the scale of cells, organelles, and molecules. An important focus of the group is to develop cryogenic microsystems for low-temperature light and electron microscopy. Other research areas of the group include nanofluidic separation technologies and devices for the characterization of nanoparticles and macromolecular complexes in solution.
